This page is to pass along some information about coming to Spain. There are several attendees who have never been to Europe let alone Spain, so we thought it would be nice to share some information/links that we think might be helpful.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Here is a large website with alot of general information about the area of the Costa Del Sol where we’ll be holding the party. Malagaweb
ELECTRICITY AND OUTLETS: The electrical current and thus the outlets are not the same as the U.S. and although the current is the same as the U.K the outlet confirguration is different. Here is a website that does a good job of explaining what you’ll need (converter and/or transformer) to ensure you electrical items (i.e. hair-dryers and mobile phone chargers) will work while in Spain: Travel Products
CURRENCY (Cash): Spain uses Euros as their currency. You need to do a little research for the best ”conversion rate” between your home currency and the Euro before you come to Spain if you want to carry some cash with you. THE WORST place to get your money exchanged is at the airport. Check your bank, as they often offer the best rate. Also try the post-office. Info about Currency in Spain
CURRENCY (Credit Card usage): When using your credit/debit card in Spain for purchases, your bank will automatically pay in local currency, while taking out the appropriate amount from your home account. Again, check with your bank before you leave about fees for withdrawals from forgein ATM machines and if they require you to notify them of your planned trip (otherwise they might deny your withdrawal).
Passports: Everyone will need a passport to gain entry into Spain. If you do not already have a passport, please PLAN AHEAD as some countries take up to 6 or more weeks to send you one. For those coming from the U.S. you do NOT need a “visa”, you will be allowed entry into Spain with your passport, just telling immigration that you are here for a vacation. American Passport information . Attendees coming from the EU or other countries will have to go to their appropriate government website to find out the specific requirements for getting a passport.
Cell/Mobile Phones: Check with your mobile phone company BEFORE you come to Spain to find out if/how you can make calls on your current plan. Many companies will “add” an international plan, but be sure you understand all the charges involved in adding that plan. Many newer phones will notify you of the rates of usage for calls and texts once you turn your phone on in another country, some won’t. Another option to consider is buying an inexpensive pre-pay phone in Spain and just “top off” minutes as you need them. Finally, you can search the internet to find “international calling card” offers – just make sure you read all the fine print (connecting for a call, price per minute, if you have to activiate it in your home country before you use it).

On The Road: Spain drives on the RIGHT SIDE of the road, so bare that in mind if you plan to rent a car while in Spain. Those driving into Spain from an EU country will need their EU driver’s license, car registration, and certificate of insurance. If you are from a non-EU country and/or using a hire car, you will be on the safe side if you have an international driver’s license. You should ask your car hire company beforehand and ask for any requirements they have. Otherwise this could lead to endless arguments at point of hire. Public Transportation: The area has many easy, inexpensive modes of transportation; local buses, the RENFE (train), and taxis. The Villa and the hotel are within walkiing distance of each other, as are the beaches and the Puerto Marina. Here’s a link with more transport information.

Drinking Water: The water on the Costa del Sol, unlike earlier days, is perfectly safe to drink. However, since they have different mineral content compared to what you have at home, it is advisable to stick to bottled water for drinking. Tap water is fine for brushing your teeth, making ice cubes, or for cooking.

The Weather: Autumn (October-November) remains warm, yet can be unpredictable sometimes with few showers. According to the natives and experienced tourists it is a great time to visit Malaga. In October the maximum average temperature stays at 23°C and 19°C. (66-73F). The sea temperature remains warm enough for swimming throughout the season.
